Volunteer Opportunities
Hospice of Anchorage volunteers are people of all ages and backgrounds. They may be homemakers, business people, health care workers, professional, office workers, college students, or retired persons. What they have in common is the desire to help and the willingness to share their time and talents.
Volunteers working with patients and families complete an in-depth training. Within this training, volunteers examine their attitudes and feelings concerning death, learn about physical and emotional needs of patients as well as their families, enhance their communication and listening skills and become familiar with hospice concepts.
There are a variety of ways for volunteers to be involved. Each person works with the Volunteer Coordinator to select the opportunities that best suite their own interests, abilities and avilability. Once the commitment has been accepted, the volunteer is available during the time of illness and maintains a supportive presence throughout bereavement. Continuing Hospice of Anchorage Volunteer Opportunities include, but are not limited to:
- styling hair
- giving massages
- preparing a meal
- joining a committee
- giving companionship
- being a public speaker
- transporting equipment
- helping with health fairs
- teaching computer skills
- helping with office tasks
- planning educational programs
- helping with fundraising events
- joining the Spiritual Care Team
- assisting with light housekeeping
- helping with errands and shopping
- doing yard work or snow removal
- serving on the Board of Directors
- providing relief periods or 'time-out' for other caregivers
